Theatre Arts

The new chapter of Theatre Arts at South Mountain Community College.

At South Mountain Community College, theatre arts are a reflection of the communities we serve and represent. We are steadfast on our way towards growing a dynamic theatre arts experience and movement. At South, we do not force students to fit the traditional art form, but rather ask how the art form can fit our students’ ever-growing needs. We welcome all to get involved in our classes and our breathtaking digital media theatre shows. Regardless of experience, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, appearance–you belong here. There is a role for everyone. We welcome students and the community at large, as well as fellow playwrights, designers, stage managers, actors and dramaturgs to collaborate and create new work that challenges the status quo. Theatre arts at South Mountain Community College welcomes you.

Mario El Caponi Mendoza

Meet Our Program Director

SUZEE (Mario El Caponi Mendoza) is stage director and digital media designer/engineer with more than 15 years experience. His focus is developing new works that feature digital media designs and creating devised theatre under the umbrella of the epic theatre style  (i.e. the Brechtian style, modeled after the German dramatist and theorist, Bertolt Brecht). He holds two MFAs: The first, creative writing with a focus in playwriting from San Francisco State University and the second, theatre arts directing with a focus in media design from the University of Iowa. Mario’s distinguished vision as stage director is trademarked by the use of his own digital media projection designs. Originally from Australia, and descendant of Mexican/Greek parents, his work infuses the beauty of his three heritages. His DNA as an artist can’t be overstated, what he does is quite rare and impressive.
