Mukia Ania - Yaqui Day of the Dead

Presentation in partnership with South Mountain Community College and the Yaqui Pride Project.

Profesora Patricia Mejia Ruiz, PhD., will discuss her research on the Yaqui Day of the Dead as featured in the Culturas Populares documentary short, “Mukia Ania” and compare its differences from other indigenous groups in Mexico and throughout the Americas.

Plus the following:

  • A special discussion and breakdown of the Yaqui ”tapanco,” or often referred to as the “mesita,” by Guadalupe Maestro, Jose Miguel Casias and guests from Rio Yaqui, Sonora.
  • A dance performance by the Guadalupe Youth Yaqui Dance cultural group led by Oscar Martinez.
  • Enjoy a sample of the traditional Yaqui soup of Wakavaki.
  • Yaqui loteria for prizes!

When: Saturday, November 4th, 2023, 2pm to 5pm.
